Why you Should be an Authority NOT an Expert
Let me be the first to say... anyone can be an expert. You can read the top 10 books in a niche and be an expert. Let's think about this... how many articles do you read, and they say basically the SAME thing? At times, it's almost verbatim.
Even so, experts can't actually be experts. The term is thrown out so loosely. I say that because a blogger who has been writing for 4 or 5 years may know more than a person just starting, but in no way can really be an expert because the topic of blogging is too broad, too many ways to niche it out and tweak it. Let's call a spade a spade. Experts are a thing of the past.
That's why you need to be a authority. Only you can be the authority.
The coolest part about being an authority is job security. If you dominate your niche as the authority, its really hard for people to replace you. Just look at Regina of Byregina.com. That girl knows her stuff & isn't afraid to recommend, network and set the bar for infoprenuership.
Here are quick 5 ways to transform out of the expert and into the Authority
- Help newbies in your niche OR just newbie in general
- Make changes, go against the norm. -Make your own possibilities
- Shout outs -Don't be afraid of sharing your competition
- NEVER EVER call yourself an "expert"
- Build your own tribe, Don't fit into a box.
As an authority I also give product reviews, behind the scenes looks, and first peaks of new and exciting things. I am showing people value in what I know and they can trust my opinions because it works - for me and for them.
A prime example of authority marketing is Patt Flynn of Smart Passive Income
- he is always pimping out his affiliate product, other brands & businesses and his own products.
Patt Flynn started out as a blogger. Then slowly migrated to podcasting. He quickly became a authority in the area of passive income & podcasting. By co-hosting his show spotlighted other passive incomers, further establishing his own authority on passive income. Since most people are interested in making more money, Patt's audience is consistently educated in the subject.
Since Patt has grown his blog / podcasting business, he has made over a million dollars, grown his e-mail list to 75,000 subscribers and continues to the voice of passive incomers. His services range between affiliate marketing to his own products. Something really interesting is he doesn't do paid one-on-one consulting. Why?
[I don't] offer any paid consultations – not because I don’t want to help, but because honestly most of the information I could give you can be found for free here on my blog or elsewhere online. -Patt Flynn
You need to become the authority of your market.
You can become the authority in your own niche and make money from it. All you need to do is be a open resource of information. This can translate into any field or niche. Then as your name starts to get associated with a specific area, your network & audience will start to grow. Another great example of this philosophy is Kayla Hollatz Why you Should Share Your Competitors Content. People will gravitate to your words.
A prime example of this is my link round up of The Ultimate List of Blogging FREEBIES to Grow your Blog, Business and Brand. In this blog post, I recommend using other peoples stuff, because I have tried it myself & see the value in it - you don't get bonus points for reinventing the wheel!
Eventually, you'll start to recommend products through affiliate links to make money. OR maybe you'll offer a killer course or consult service package, people cannot refuse. OR you write a book. OR you can sell your blog, company, likeness or name. It's up to you. Regardless of how you make money, you need to be the authority.
Ultimately, your own experiences, successes and challenges combine to create a unique experience to share with the world. That is the source of your authority. No one else can tell your story better than you. So, what's your story? Where is your authority? Feel free to share in the comments below. I love to connect people together - bridges are beautiful things!
